Starting a candle making business in the UK is one of the most accessible small business opportunities available. Low startup costs, a proven market, multiple sales channels and a genuinely passionate customer base make it an attractive proposition for makers at every level. But there are some important things to get right from the start - particularly around compliance - that will determine whether your business is built on solid foundations or costly mistakes.
Is there a market for handmade candles in the UK?
Absolutely. The UK home fragrance market is worth over 1.5 billion pounds and growing year on year. Consumer appetite for natural, artisan alternatives to mass-produced candles has never been stronger. Shoppers actively seek out independent makers on Etsy, at markets, on Instagram and through independent gift retailers - and they are willing to pay a premium for quality, authenticity and natural ingredients.
What do you need to start?
Equipment
The basics are straightforward: a wax melting pot or double boiler, a thermometer, scales that measure to 1g accuracy, a pouring jug, candle containers or moulds, wicks, and a workspace that can get warm and waxy. Total startup equipment cost is typically between 50 and 150 pounds.
Wax
Soy wax and coconut-rapeseed blends are the most popular choices for natural candle makers. Both provide a clean burn, excellent scent throw with the right fragrance load, and appeal to eco-conscious consumers. Paraffin is cheaper but increasingly difficult to market to premium buyers.
Fragrance
This is where the real difference is made. Pure essential oil blends produce a more complex, nuanced and genuinely therapeutic scent than synthetic fragrance oils. They are also more expensive, which is reflected in your retail price and positions your candles at the premium end of the market. All our essential oil blends are specifically tested in soy wax and come with full CLP documentation.
CLP compliance - the most important thing to get right
Every candle you sell in the UK must carry a CLP-compliant label. This is not optional and is a legal requirement under UK CLP regulations. Your label must include hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard and precautionary statements, allergen declarations and a UFI code. The CLP must be calculated at the specific percentage of fragrance used in your finished product.
Getting this wrong can result in trading standards action, product recalls and significant financial and reputational damage. All our essential oil blends come with CLP documentation at standard candle usage rates, and our CLP service can produce bespoke documentation for your specific formulation.
Where to sell your candles
- Etsy: The largest online marketplace for handmade products. High traffic, established buyer trust and relatively simple setup. Fees apply per listing and per sale.
- Your own website: Higher margin, full control of the customer experience and brand. Shopify is the most popular platform for candle makers. Takes longer to drive traffic than Etsy.
- Markets and fairs: Excellent for building local brand awareness, getting direct customer feedback and generating cash flow quickly. Christmas markets in particular are very strong for candle sales.
- Independent retailers: Approaching local gift shops, deli owners and interiors stores with a trade price list can unlock wholesale orders that provide reliable recurring revenue.
- Instagram and social media: Essential for building a brand and community around your products. Video content performing well includes candle pours, scent reveals and making-of content.
Pricing your candles
A common mistake is underpricing. Calculate your cost of goods (wax, fragrance, container, wick, label, box, postage) and multiply by at least 3.5 to 4 for retail price. A 30cl soy candle made with pure essential oils typically retails between 18 and 28 pounds depending on branding and market positioning. Do not compete on price - compete on quality, story and presentation.
