How to Make a Room Spray with Essential Oils

Room sprays are one of the quickest and most satisfying things you can make with essential oils. In under 10 minutes, with just a few simple ingredients, you can create a beautiful natural home fragrance that is completely free from synthetic chemicals, alcohol or propellants. Here is everything you need to know.

What you need to make a room spray

  • A spray bottle - dark glass is best to protect the essential oils from UV light
  • Distilled or cooled boiled water
  • A solubiliser or dispersant such as Polysorbate 20 - this helps the oil mix evenly into the water rather than floating on top
  • Your chosen essential oil blend - we recommend between 2% and 5% essential oil by volume
  • A preservative if you want a shelf life longer than a few days

Simple room spray recipe

For a 100ml room spray:

  • 90ml distilled water
  • 5ml Polysorbate 20 solubiliser
  • 2 to 4ml of your chosen essential oil blend (approximately 40 to 80 drops)
  • 0.5ml preservative such as Optiphen

Method: Mix the essential oil with the solubiliser first, then add the water and preservative. Shake well before each use.

The best essential oil blends for room sprays

If you want to skip the DIY and buy a ready-made natural room spray, our range of alcohol-free room sprays are made with exactly this kind of recipe - pure essential oils in a natural base with no alcohol and a 12-month shelf life.

Tips for a professional result

  • Always shake before spraying - essential oils will separate from water even with a solubiliser.
  • Test on a small area of fabric before using as a linen spray - some oils can mark delicate fabrics.
  • Label with the date made and ingredients, especially if giving as a gift.
  • Store away from direct sunlight to preserve the scent and shelf life.
