Frequently asked questions
Do essential oils survive saponification in cold process soap?
It depends on the oil. The high pH and heat of saponification can fade delicate citrus oils, while heavier oils like cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, clove and lavender survive well and provide lasting scent in the finished bar.
How much essential oil should I use in soap?
As a general guideline, use essential oils at 2 to 3% of the total oil weight in cold process soap. For 1kg of base oils, that's roughly 20 to 30g of essential oil, though you should always check the IFRA certificate for your specific blend.
Do I need a Cosmetic Product Safety Report to sell handmade soap in the UK?
Yes. Soap sold in the UK is classified as a cosmetic, so you need a CPSR signed off by a qualified assessor, along with a Product Information File and correct allergen labelling. Our essential oil blends come with the SDS and IFRA documentation your assessor will need.
Is there a minimum order for wholesale soap making essential oils?
No. You can order from 10ml to test a new blend right up to 500ml for full production runs.
